The Patron Saint of Telephones

Archangel Gabriel

It’s better being out of batteries
or in a gap between the signal masts –
the sound turned off, just in case.
Hello. Sorry, you’re breaking up.
I have whole days in which I never
think a single thought of you,
as though I dial a solid tone
that rings the crystal of my head.
Because I’m tired of interference,
I’d like to change my number please,
to one that can never be connected.
It’ll be just like I’ve up-ed and left
to rent a cottage on the Dorset coast,
where there’s no pub and half a mile
to walk to reach the nearest shop.
